Stony Brook Medical

Introduction:

The Stony Brook Medical Center is situated in Stony Brook, New York. Located in the Long Island it is the biggest medical center in the area. The medical center comprises of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine and the Stony Brook University hospital. The hospital is the lone tertiary care hospital along with level 1 trauma center in the county of Suffolk. It has 540 beds and more than 5000 employees. It is easily the largest hospital in Suffolk County. Its Heart Center is the only one in the county that performs open heart surgery. Other centers such as the Cancer and Cerebrovascular centers attract many patients from the area. It also has cutting edge treatment and diagnostic facilities.

It is also the home to the first kidney transplant performed on Long Island and has now performed more than 1000 transplants to date. The Stony Brook Medical Center has initiated the first Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis center in the country. It is also a regional referral center for perinatal and neonatal intensive care, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, pediatric and adults AIDS, cystic fibrosis, burns and trauma. It is the regional resource center for the emergency management. The Stony Brook Medical Center is also the home to the Cody Center which is for development disabilities and autism. It is the first comprehensive ALS center in Long Island.

Medical School:

You can also find a school of medicine at the Stony Brook Medical Center that provides preclinical and clinical education to medical students. There are 450 students enrolled at the moment and is the only medical school in the area and offers superb clinical and research opportunities. The faculty at the medical school is of national and international repute. There are many active residency training programs in the School of Medicine which comprises of more than 500 residents. Most of the residents provide help at the nearby clinics and hospitals that include Winthrop University Hospital, VA Hospital at Northport and Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Other institutions such as Schools of Health Sciences are located on the same campus as the medical center. The schools included in this institution offer quality education to more than 3000 students and also conduct many research programs, services and professional education. There are many resources such as technical, laboratory and professional that support academic activities of faculty and students.

History:

The medical center was designed by Chicago based architect Bertrand Goldberg. The construction of the medical center began in 1976 and the smallest of the buildings Basic Sciences Health Tower was finished in the same year. After another couple of years the second building Clinical Sciences Tower was completed and finally in 1980 the actual Hospital was erected. This three building complex is situated in the east campus and is separate to the rest of the Stony Brook University via Nicolls Road. The huge height of these buildings provides them a dominating presence over the skyline and these buildings can be seen from miles across.

Latest Developments:

The public opening of phase 1 of the first major renovation of the medical center was celebrated in September 2008. This project along with others ensure that Stony Brook Medical Center continues to be a respected healthcare center by giving access to the latest medical technology and facilities. Along with this it offers the best comfort and convenience to the people in that region. It is the first renovation for the 28 year old medical center. The new facilities include a new wing that houses the Women and Infants Center, the expanded emergency department and the completely modern Surgical Suite including an OR Pharmacy. Most of the changes have been made to accommodate the latest surgical technologies and raised volumes and some other changes were made in order to improve the overall patient and visitor’s experience.

Development of new facilities:

The Center for Outpatient Services was opened at Stony Brook University which is situated a short walk away from the Medical Center. It was opened in 2007 and is designed for convenience and comfort of the patients and their families. The service area within the center includes The Imaging Center, Outpatient Cancer Center and Center of Pain Management. These new facilities offer free parking and valet services, easy access and spacious and calm public areas and also food refreshments.

The Stony Brook Medical Center along with Southampton Hospital announced a comprehensive alliance between the two facilities in order to bring better clinical services to the people of Suffolk County. This is the third hospital to affiliate with the medical center.
